Common Questions
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I know if CBT is right for me?
CBT is one of the most widely researched psychotherapies in the world and has strong evidence for treating anxiety, depression, OCD, stress, and many other difficulties. If you're experiencing distressing thoughts, emotions, or behaviours that are interfering with your daily life, CBT is likely to be helpful. A consultation with Dr. Trew will help clarify whether this approach is the right fit for your specific needs.
How many sessions will I need?
The number of sessions varies depending on the nature and severity of your difficulties and your individual goals. CBT is typically a short-to-medium term therapy — most clients see significant improvement within 10–20 sessions, though some difficulties may require more extensive treatment. Dr. Trew will discuss a recommended course of treatment with you after your initial assessment.
How much does therapy cost and do you accept insurance?
Session fees are $245 for a 50-minute appointment. Many extended health benefit plans include coverage for services provided by a Licensed Psychologist. We recommend contacting your insurance provider to confirm your coverage before your first appointment. We do not offer direct billing but will automatically issue receipts for submission to your plan.
What happens in the first appointment?
Your first one to two sessions are assessment appointments. Dr. Trew will ask questions to understand your history, current difficulties, and goals for therapy. This is also an opportunity for you to ask questions and get a feel for whether you feel comfortable working together. By the end of this session, you'll have a clearer picture of what therapy might look like for you.
Do you offer telehealth / online therapy?
Is what I share in therapy confidential?
Yes. Confidentiality is a cornerstone of psychological services. Everything discussed in sessions is kept strictly private with very limited exceptions required by law (e.g., imminent risk of harm to yourself or others). Dr. Trew will discuss the limits of confidentiality in detail during your first appointment.
Yes. Dr. Trew offers secure, confidential video therapy for clients throughout British Columbia. Research shows that online CBT is just as effective as in-person therapy for most anxiety and mood difficulties. In-person sessions are not currently available.
You have options. Choose evidence-based therapy provided by a licensed, doctoral level psychologist.
Is therapy covered by MSP?
Unfortunately, psychological services, including psychotherapy, are not covered by the BC Medical Services Plan (MSP). However, you may have partial or full coverage for sessions through your extended benefits plan. Contact your extended benefits provider for more information about your coverage.
